Art of Green Space Competition Winners to Receive Awards at Ceremony

Milwaukee, Wis. – July 15, 2009 — Collaborating with the Milwaukee Public Schools, Project EverGreen will present the Art of Green Space Competition awards during a news conference to be held at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 11 a.m. Members of the media, award winners and the general public are invited to attend the news conference.

Specifically, young artists from kindergarten through twelfth grade were asked to express through art, music, writing, dance or drama. These young artists depicted how important green spaces, such as well managed lawns and landscapes, gardens, parks, sports fields and golf courses are to the environment, the economy, and the overall quality of life.

“Unfortunately, many adults take these vital green spaces for granted,” said Den Gardner, executive director of Project EverGreen. “Our goal with the Art of Green Spaces Competition is to bridge this knowledge gap by providing a venue in which young artists can creatively express their feelings as to why green spaces are so important. Project EverGreen is proud to present the awards to so many deserving students.”

Project EverGreen will hand out 16 awards during the ceremony, some to individual entrants, and others to teams of students. Students will receive awards in the following categories: Art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, etc.), Writing (poetry, stories, articles, etc.), and Dance and Drama (videotapes). Prizes for each category are allocated to elementary, middle, and high school ages, with $100 and a blue ribbon for first, $75 and a red ribbon for second, and $50 and a yellow ribbon for third place. All participants will receive a green participation ribbon.

Winning entries will be on display through August 30 at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum.
